James Leeper, Jr. was one of the Early Settlers of Augusta County, Virginia. James was born 1730-1731 in North Ireland. James obtained land in Augusta County on May 16, 1759. He sold this land back to his father on August 17, 1762 and moved to join his brother NICHOLAS and Uncle ROBERT LEEPER in the present day Gaston County, North Carolina, settling at Southpoint on the Catawaba River. He married, (unknown). One report has his wife as Jean Armstrong daughter of Matthew and Mary (Beatty) ARMSTRONG, Her sister CATHERINE is said to have married ROBERT LEEPER. Jean died about 1800.

Note: James Leeper Jr.: James died on 18 July 1765 and was buried at the Smith Cemetery in Gaston County, North Carolina. A photograph of his tombstone is on Find A Grave. It reads, “Here lies ye body of James Leeper who departed this life July ye 18,1765 age 34 years.”48 So James was born about 1731 in Ireland. Gaston County was formed in 1846 from Lincoln County, which was formed in 1778 from Tryon County, which was formed in 1769 from Mecklenburg County. So James Leeper actually died in Mecklenburg County in 1765. His estate was recorded in Mecklenburg County in 1766. It indicates he left a widow and five orphans. Nicholas Leeper and Jean Leeper were both purchasers at his estate sale.
