James Kempson was born in March 1798 and baptised on 27th May 1798 when he was 10 weeks old. His older brother William was baptised the same day. They were baptised at Totternhoe in Bedfordshire and were the sons of Judith Kempson, formerly Sear, and her husband George Kempson, a labourer. James was the youngest of their nine children.

James's father died in 1815 and his father in 1823.

James was married on 20th October 1827 to Mary Ann Culverhouse. She was from the hamlet of Eggington in the parish of Leighton Buzzard. They married at Leighton Buzzard and then settled at Eggington. They went on to have seven daughter between about 1828 and 1849. Each census from 1841 to 1861 finds James and Mary living in Eggington with some of their children. James worked as an agricultural labourer, whilst Mary was a straw plaiter. By 1871 all their children had left home.

James died in 1878, aged 80. Mary survived him by sixteen years.
