Mary Ann Culverhouse claimed to have been born around 1807 at Clipstone, a farm in the hamlet of Eggington in the parish of Leighton Buzzard. No baptism for her as an infant has been found, although it is possible that she was the Mary Ann daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Culverhouse baptised in 1825 in the neighbouring parish of Stanbridge, but who was said to be from Eggington. Certainly Mary's father was a farmer called Thomas, as he lived with her after her marriage.
Mary was married in 1827 at Leighton Buzzard to James Kempson, an agricultural labourer from the nearby village of Totternhoe. After their marriage they settled in Eggington, where they appear to have had seven daughters between about 1828 and 1849. Each census from 1841 to 1861 finds Mary and James living in Eggington with some of their children. Mary was described in both 1851 and 1861 as a straw plaiter. By 1871 all their children had left home.
James died in 1878, aged 80.
The 1881 census finds Mary living with her granddaughter Jane Dudley in Eggington. Mary was described as a pauper at this time. Ten years later Mary was living with her widowed daughter Elizabeth Dudley and two Dudley grandchildren, including the Jane she had been living with ten years earlier.
Mary died on 6th March 1895 at Eggington. She was about 87 years old.
