Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:


  • James Hall received a patent for 150 acres "on Stewart's Mill Creek" on 3d November, 1750, (as listed in the Chalkley's records below. This land was subsequently sold by Robert Hall, James Hall's son to Andrew Donnaly on 25 January 1770, listed in the dispositions below. The location of "Stewart's Mill Creek" has not been determined, since there are no other references to this in Chalkley's).

  • Page 399.--19th August, 1760. James ( ) Hall and Susanna ( ) to Robert Hall, £10, 212 acres on Cowpasture River; cor. to tract formerly in possession of Michael Rainey, but now Charles Gillum. (Note: the "Michael Rainey" is most likely "Michael Railey" whose estate is listed in Chalkley's. John Black posted bond as administrator of Michael Railey's estate on 23 March 1753).
  • Page 385.--25th January, 1770. Robert Hall and Isbaella ( ), of Orange County, North Carolina, to Andrew Donnaly, £70, 150 acres by patent, 3d November, 1750, to James Hall, deceased, father to Robert, on Stewart's Mill Creek.
