    James Gillespie was baptised by his father Matthew Gillespie (jr.) in 1749 in the Tinkling Spring Church congregation (Wilson's, "Tinkling Springs, Headwaters of Freedom"). Census records show James Gillespie in 1779 as a SC resident of Old 96th District. Also listed in this 1779 record are Matthew Gillespie, Jun., Wm. Baskins, and several Pickens and Pattersons, all kinsmen we believe.
