Based upon the lack of records, Matthew appears to have migrated with the Pickens family to South Carolina by abt. 1752.
  • Vol. 1 - MAY, 1768 (A). - Mathew Glaspy vs. Robert Raburn.--Mathew is from Granville County, South Carolina. Account and affidavit.

Notes

Matthew Gillespie (called Jr. for clarity) b. 1726 in Pennsylvania and d. 1793 in Abbeville Dist., S.C. According to records of the Kerr Family Assn. of America (Eugene E. Trimble), Matthew Gillespie jr. had two marriages, (1) Anna _________, and (2) Frances "Fanny" Pickens. Matthew Jr. is the son of Matthew Gillespie Sr. and Lucy Pickens. After the death of his father, Matthew Sr., in 1728, his mother, Lucy Pickens Gillespie, remarried John Kerr in 1730. In 1740, John Kerr proved importation of Lucy, and her two children, Matthew and Margaret Gillespie and four Kerr children from Ireland via PA to Augusta Co., VA.

Advisory

Note: some sources claim that this Matthew Gillespie married 2nd, Frances Patterson in 1775, Elbert County, Georgia (not possible - disproved). Others claim Matthew may have had a prior marriage to Anna Frances Lowry in 1745, Augusta County, Virginia (again this needs sources to substantiate).
