Facts and Events
James Ellison was one of the Early Settlers of Augusta County, Virginia __________________________ [edit] Records in Augusta County, VAFrom Chalkley’s Augusta County Records:
[edit] NotesThis information is from the handwritten notes that Oswell Ellison took on "An Ellison Family of Virginia" that was given to him by Mrs. Hugh Ellison Voress. Oswell's notes list this James Ellison (born in 1726) as the first James Ellison. James and his wife Ann (see notes about Ann Addis) moved to Augusta County, VA in 1768 and to Greenbrier County, VA in 1771. Apparently, James made his will in 1788 in Greenbrier County, VA. James's will was probated in December 1791 in what is now Summers County, WV. Another website, genealogy@jrac.com regarding James Sr. Ellison (b. 1726) agrees with Oswell's notes. I am changing our dates to match these resources which are a bit different from BC's original input. As for his burial, one source, genweb@jrac.com "James Sr. Ellison" gives the burial site as Bradshaw's Run, Summers County. I tend to believe the other source, a gedcom on ancestry.com posted by LanaSelf@comcast.net 2005 which notes his burial in the Ellison Cemetery, Hans Creek, Greenbrier (perhaps Monroe now] County. Lana Self's text about James Ellison Sr. includes a note about a land patent for 82 acres on the New River rec'd in 1774 and the text of his will dated 12 Aug. 1788. Her research however, disagrees with our lineage of James regarding James's grandfather whom she notes was Lawrence where we have Thomas. Question as of Oct 29, 2004: Did he fight in Revolutionary War? pdeeds007@aol.com gedcom (2006) called "The Family Deeds.": Note: In 1774 received a land patent for 82 acres on New River. His log cabin stood on the southwest side of Hans Creek below the mouth of Blue Lick, in what is now Monroe Co., WV, and into the 20th century its location is marked by half-buried foundation stones, a log barn, a nearby spring, and a scraggly apple orchard."(Ref. The Ellisons of Hans Creek Valley by Helen Steele Ellison with assistance of George Parkinson Pg.56). This source also notes that James's middle name was Isaac and that his birth year was 1735. This James Ellison, Sr. was the first Ellison into Va. apparently. He was one of at least 9 children. I don't know if any of his siblings moved to Va. He and wife Anne English Addis had at least 7 children. Matthew married a daughter of Francis Farley. References
