Notes

This information is from the handwritten notes that Oswell Ellison had taken from the "An Ellison Family of Virginia" that was given to him by Mrs. Hugh Ellison Voress (Charles Town, WV).

I can not understand his notes. Bill Cole originally had Elizabeth Pennington as the mother of James Ellison (who was born 8-14-1807). Oswell's notes conflicted with that. They said that Mary (Polly) Tuggle was the mother of James and that Elizabeth Pennington was the wife of Asa Ellison, Sr. So I changed that.

The confusing thing: Oswell lists two wives for Asa Ellison, Sr. The first is Elizabeth Pennington (married to Asa in 1775), and the second is Elizabeth Kilpatrick (whom Asa married in Greenbrier County on 12-17-1782). I kept Elizabeth Pennington as the mother of Asa, Jr. since Bill Cole already had her name in his files, and since she was married to Asa, Sr. long enough for them to have a child together.

This needs to be researced further.

16 March 2007: Several family trees available on the internet clear this question of Asa's wives. The first was in fact Elizabeth Kilpatrick, married in Dec. 1782 as listed above. Asa Jr., b. 1784, is one of the eldest of this couple's 10 children. Elizabeth Pennington was Asa Sr.'s second wife. They had as many as 13 children according to one source on ancestry.com. Thus, I am changing our ancestor back to E. Kilpatrick.

From pdeeds007@aol.com gedcom (2006) called "The Family Deeds.": From "The East Kentuckian" A Journal of Genealogy and History, Vol. II, Number IV, March 1972: Pg. 3: Everyone agrees that Asa first came, with his family, to what is now Whitley Co. in 1808. A second indisputable point is that he settled on Clear Fork branch of the Cumberland River. His patent for the land which is still known as "Ellison's Bend" was granted 30 Nov. 1815, (pg. 445, Jillison, "Kentucky Land Grants") and descendants of his live there yet.

This source notes that Asa William Ellison, Sr. died in 1840, Clear Creek, Whitley Co., KY
