  • Vol. 2. - Marriage Bond - 1798--January 9, Timothy Hartigan and James East, surety. Timothy Hartigan and Nancy East, daughter of said James East.
  • Vol. 2 - James East's Declaration, September 3d, 1832: Born in Goochland County in August, 1753; enlisted in Fluvanna under Capt. Hayden and Lieut. Benjamin Anderson; Major George Thompson and Col. Samuel Cabell; Capt. John Fox, of Louisa; Capt. Thomas Holt, in Fluvanna; James Burley, Capt. Samuel Richardson, Lieut. Thomas Thurman; has lived seven years in Rockbridge.

East, James - born 8/10/1753 in Goochland County, Virginia, youngest son of Thomas & Winifred; entered service 1776 in Fluvanna County, Virginia, where he resided; moved 1780 to Louisa County, Virginia, where entered service in 1781; resided there 5 years, thence to Nelson County (area later Amherst Connty), Virginia, thence in 1825 to Rockbridge County, Virginia, where granted Pension in 1844; died 10/4/1844, leaving widow Martha, son William, & another child mentioned but not named; married 2/9/1778 Martha, daughter of David & Elizabeth Clarkson at home of Martha's brother-in-law, John Herndon, Goochland County, Virginia; widow born 7/1763; widow granted Pension 1945 [sic, prob. s/b 1845] while residing at Jordan's Point, near Lexington, Rockbridge County, Virginia; children's births: Nancy 2/1/1779 (married Timothy Hartigan), Polly 1/19/1781 (married John Brady 1812), Elizabeth C. 9/30/1782 (married Reason Barnett, who died 6/10/1820), Celeth 8/28/1784 (died 1806), Tarlton 3/5/1786 (married Sally Coffey), David 2/12/1788 (married Elizabeth Beard), Anderson R., & William; other date: Hedgeman East died 9/3/1814.   1.   From Message Board:

    James East , son of Thomas East4(Joseph 3, Edward 2, Thomas 1)and Winnifred Chapman, was born 10 August 1753 in Goochland Co VA. While a resident of Albemarle Co (the part which became Fluvanna Co in 1777) he enlisted and served with the Virginia troops from September 1776 for four months; he hired a substitute to replace him for the remainder of his three year enlistment. After residing for five years in Louisa Co, James moved to Amherst Co (that part which became Nelson Co in 1807) and lived there until 1825 when he moved to Rockbridge Co. In Rockbridge Co he applied for and received a war pension in February 1844.
    James married Martha Clarkson, daughter of David Clarkson and Elizabeth Jackson, on 9 February 1778 at the home of her brother-in-law John Herndon in Goochland Co. Martha was born in July 1763. James died on 4 October 1844 leaving his wife and many children-
