Advisory on James Allen

There is another contemporary James Allen in early Augusta County, born about the same time that could be confused with this James Allen. The other James Allen, son of early settler William Allen, married Margaret Anderson. Walter Dixon provides research in documenting the two different men named Capt. James Allen of early Augusta.

James Allen's will (Sr.), farmer--To children of daughter Rachel Thomson 5 shillings each; to daughter Margaret Bell 5 shillings; to daughter Agnes Shields 6 shillings; to son William Bell 5 shillings; to daughter Rebecca McClure 5 shillings; to daughter Elizabeth McNair 5 shillings; to daughter Mary Allen 5 shillings; to son Francis Allen 50; to son James home plantation.

• Page 162.--2d January, 1756. John Hogshead's will--Son, James; son, John, the bark house and tan yard and 2 acres of meadow joining Robert Gilkeson's line; son, David; son, Michael; daughter, Rebecca Hogshead; to grandson, Wm. Allen. Executors, David and Michael Hogshead. Teste: James Bell, John Archer, James Allen. Proved, November, 1756, by Allen and Bell. Both executors qualify with James Allen and Wm. Hind. (Note: John Hogshead was the father-in-law of James Allen).

• Page 396.--18th May, 1768. James Hogshead and Elizabeth ( ) to John Hogshead, Jr., 20 shillings. 45 acres on Moffet's branch being part of his father's tract of 400 acres bearing date 1st June, 17.46,; corner said John's line. Delivered: George Moffett, Michael Hogshead, James Allen. Delivered: James Hogshead, 25th July, 1770.

Information on James Allen

James Allen was born about 1716 in Ireland. About 1738 James and his brother William moved to the Valley of Virginia and can be found in the land records of Orange County, Virginia [the parent county of Augusta]. They first appear in adjoining land records on Cathey's Creek [aka Middle River]. James married Mary "Mollie" Hogshead about 1739. Their daughter Rachel, the first of twelve children, was born in 1740. "LIST OF BAPTISMS By REV. JOHN CRAIG" identifies several of their children's birth records [NOTE: The name Margaret & Isabel was repeated and used again when Margaret I and Isabel I died as infants] James served in the local militia in the 1740's and 1750's in Capt. James Cathey's Company and provided supplies to the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. James attained the rank of Captain. James died about 1791. His will was written in 1788 and probated 18 October 1791.
