[edit] Information on James AllenJames Allen was born about 1716 in Ireland. About 1738 James and his brother William moved to the Valley of Virginia and can be found in the land records of Orange County, Virginia [the parent county of Augusta]. They first appear in adjoining land records on Cathey's Creek [aka Middle River]. James married Mary "Mollie" Hogshead about 1739. Their daughter Rachel, the first of twelve children, was born in 1740. "LIST OF BAPTISMS By REV. JOHN CRAIG" identifies several of their children's birth records [NOTE: The name Margaret & Isabel was repeated and used again when Margaret I and Isabel I died as infants] James served in the local militia in the 1740's and 1750's in Capt. James Cathey's Company and provided supplies to the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. James attained the rank of Captain. James died about 1791. His will was written in 1788 and probated 18 October 1791. References
