Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA
Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:
- Page 112.--21st May, 1755. John Patton, Jr., to Jacob Sybert, 210 acres conveyed by Ro. Green to John Patton, 5th November, 17xlii (1752?), recorded in Augusta on same stream as above (southernmost branch of South Branch of Potomac); corner to tract sold to Roger Dyer. Teste: Thomas Fulton, John Mills.
Jacob Seybert of Ft. Seybert
Jacob Seybert acquired land, which included a fort (called Fort Seybert) and a mill from John Patton, Jr. on the South Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River in 1755. In April, 1758, Bemino, the renowned medicine man of the Delaware Indians during the French & Indian War (1754-1763), led the Delaware and Shawnee Indians against the British positions at Ft. Upper Tract and Ft. Seybert. The Indians destroyed both forts and many soldiers and settlers in the vicinity were killed and captured. A few managed to escape. Processioning List of 1755
- "Processioning" was the process or periodically reviewing and agreeing upon property lines between settlers. Processioning Lists can be useful in determining the area of a settler and the neighboring settlers at a specific time period:
