He is on the 1850 census in Marion Twp., Hocking Co., Oh., age 3. with parents, [p 841 fam #118/120] and there on the 1860 census, age 13, with sister Elizabeth and her husband, Peter Wagoner, on farm of Daniel Lefler.[p 158 fam #1040/1028] We find a reference to Civil War service in Ancestry.com, Civil War Muster Rolls; "Jacob Rittgers, Co. F., 2 Ohio Heavy Artillery, Corp on induction, discharged Private." It indicates he also listed as "Jacob Richards". He married Frances RED 20 Aug 1868 in Hocking Co., Oh.[HVRM, Book "C", p. 474] She was born about 1846 in Oh., the daughter of Isaac and Sarah (__) Red. She is seen on 1860 census, age 16, with parents in Marion Twp., Hocking Co., Oh. Isaac, 63, farmer, b. Va., and Sarah, 57 . [fam #1077/1065] The 1870 census shows us Jacob, 23, with wife Frances, 25, and son "Ugene " age 1. They are still in Marion Twp., Hocking Co.[p 510 fam #270/273] In 1880 he is 33, and still farming in Marion Twp. With him is wife Frances, age 34, and seven children.[E D 63, p. 109C, fam #244/247] The Family Story tells us that he was a "veteran of the Civil War, and in the late eighties did an extensive timber business in Ohio, owning and operating several saw mills and a coal mine. Later he entered the Ministry, in which Profession he remained until his death about 1904. He was an able man in business and quite successful in the Ministry." The family story also reports that the information for this family was collected in 1914! Three of his children are said to have died prior to that. We find in Civil War records that he enlisted in "F Co., 2nd HA Reg., Oh. Enlisted 8 Feb 1864, musician, age 18, mustered out Nashville, Tenn., 23 Aug 1865."
