Jacob Caplinger was baptized: 21 July 1749 in the Bern Reform Church, Lancaster Co. PA (1) His mother probably died in his childbirth. His father remarried and the family moved to Augusta County, Virginia. His father was in the August County tax records as early as 1755. Jacob showed up there in the court records in 1774. (2) (3) (4) Somehow Jacob Caplinger acquired 110 acres of land in Hampshire County (now West Virginia) because he and his brother John Caplinger are listed there in the 1782 tax records. (5) The area where they lived became part of the newly formed county of Hardy in 1786 and Jacob Caplinger bought another 100 acres of land for £200 in 1787. (6) The very next year their county changed again and thus they were then in Pendleton County, VA (now part of West Virginia). Jacob served there on the grand jury. (7) In 1790 Jacob Caplinger and his wife Sarah sold the land they had just purchased for £200 for only £100. (8) The area where they lived was on the south branch of the Potomac River where there were many early deaths from consumption. Jacob and his wife Sarah had seven children by this time. Jacob's younger half brothers, Henry and Adam, were in their 20's and they all moved to Woodford County, KY. He and his brothers are listed in the Woodford County tax records from 1792-1796. (9) On 16 Apr 1792 Jacob Caplinger purchased another 100 acres of land, in Woodford, for £100. (10) This time he made a profit. He and wife wife Sarah sold this land in 1804 for $1000. (13) In the meantime he had purchased in 1802 another 100 acres, also in Woodford, for $1,308. (12) By 1811 they were all in Shelby County, KY. (14) In the 1812 tax record Henry had 168 acres, Jacob had 152 acres and Adam had 175 acres. (15) They were all listed as living "by Bullskin," or near Bullskin Creek. On Wednesday June 24, 1812 Order Books of Shelby Co. "Ordered that Jacob Caplinger do make his fine to the Commonwealth in the sum of two dollars for a Contempt order in the face of the court for disobeying their order in (?) to keep a noise by talking in the Court House when directed otherwise." (16) In April 1813 Jacob Caplinger lost his son John. (17) Possibly in the War of 1812. Three years later in March 1816 he also died. His widow Sarah was in court relinquishing her right to be administrator. (18) The inventory of his estate was taken 5 Apr 1816. (19) Among many things listed were 5 horses, a couple of cows, 12 sheep, 19 hogs, 12 geese, 1 little spinning wheel 2s., 4 books 2s. Jacob had started to purchase some land in Shelby County from his brother, Henry, shortly before he died. The deed was completed on December 17, 1817 with Henry and his wife Mary selling the land for twelve hundred dollars. "This Indenture made this 17th day of December in the Year of or Lord 1817 Between Henry Caplinger and Mary his wife of the county of Shelby State of Kentucky of the one part and Sarah Caplinger widow and relict of Jacob Caplinger dec'd Mary Caplinger who is intermarried with Jonathan Hedger George Caplinger Jacob Caplinger Sarah Jones Infant heir of Elizabeth Caplinger dec't Phebe Caplinger who is intermarried with Lewis Hampton Barbara Caplinger who is intermarried with Simon Deerin Sarah Caplinger who is intermarried with Robert Tague Elizabeth Caplinger infant heir of John Caplinger deceased and Henry Caplinger heirs representative of Jacob Caplinger deceased of the other part." (21) The heirs paid Henry Caplinger $1,200. They then sold the land for $1,600. (20) When his sons George and Jacob Calinger finally made settlement of his estate, there was $431.26 subject to distribution. (22) His widow, Sarah, must have moved to Scott Co., KY.
