Subj:Re: Col. Hugh's tax records Date:4/29/05 3:38:47 PM Pacific Daylight Time From:AlexSThomp The land wasn't exactly free, but it was much cheaper than in PA. They were part of a massive migration of the Scotch-Irish from northern Lancaster Co. Some Presbyterian congregations lost over half their members. They came to an area that had been bypassed by earlier settlers, and one of the leaders of the migration was Alexander Mebane, Sr. who became the first High Sheriff of Orange Co. when it was formed in 1752. He was John Tinnin's brother-in-law. The families report that Alexander's sister was John's wife, and John's sister was Alexander's wife. There's no real proof for that, but firm family tradition.

One shaky thing about the family tradition is that from the 1930's on folks were saying Alexander Mebane's wife was Mary Tinnin, but I'm convinced it was Jane Tinnin. For why, see my 2002 post to the Mebane Family Forum, (http://genforum.genealogy.com/mebane/messages/165.html)
