Houston E.Cowan was born in Boyd's Creek, Sevier Co.Tn., 4 November, 1820. He died 9 September 1892, Marion Co. Tn. He married Julia Ann Seaton, daughter of Philip Seaton, probably in Sevier Co. It is known that Hugh's father died when he was a young boy, probably around 1830. The family names of Evans, Montgomery, Boyd and Houston were used in this family for several generations. It is highly likely that Hugh was descended from the Cowans and Walkers who were at Castle's Woods, Va.

Although we don't know Hugh's parents, all of his siblings are known. They are: MARGARET COWAN b. 14 October 1798, Boyd's Creek, Sevier Co. TN. Mar.
