"Born December 4, 1810, in a brick-faced log house on Antietam Creek, Washington County, Maryland, Henry Yesler was the son of Catherine Leiter, granddaughter of the German immigrant for whom the town had been named. His father, Henry Yesler, reportedly married his mother shortly before or after she gave birth. The marriage, if indeed there was one, lasted only long enough to give young Henry a paternal surname. The divorce, if indeed one was necessary, freed both parties, and Catherine was free to marry D.L. Lowman, with whom she had three sons and two daughters."

Mr. Yesler was born in Leitersburg, Maryland, on December 4, 1810. His parents Henry and Catherine (Leiter) Yesler, were natives of Pennsylvania and Lietersburg, respectively."

"Henry Leiter Yesler was born in a December sometime between 1810 and 1813 to Henry Yesler and Catherine Stotler of Leitersburg, Maryland, a town founded by his mother's grandfather. Many years later, allegations made in a suit over Yesler's estate claimed that his mother and father were wed only after his birth, and the recorded date of their marriage, December 26, 1810, could support this if he was in fact born that year. However, in several federal censuses Yesler provided an age that would place his birth in 1812 or 1813. It seems unlikely the matter can ever be fully resolved, but it is known that his parents were married only briefly before divorcing and marrying others, and that Yesler remained estranged from his father's side of the family his entire life." [This marriage is found in Maryland Marriages, 1667-1899 as between Henry Yesler and Catherine Stotler. Reference in History of Leitersburg [4], calls Catherine Stotler, daughter of Peter, Henry Yesler's wife.]

Founders of Seattle, Washington
|
The founding of Seattle is usually dated from the arrival of the Denny Party on November 13, 1851, at Alki Point. The group had travelled overland from the Midwest to Portland, Oregon, then made a short ocean journey up the Pacific coast into Puget Sound, with the express intent of founding a town. The next April, Arthur A. Denny abandoned the original site at Alki in favor of a better-protected site on Elliott Bay, near the south end of what is now downtown Seattle. Around the same time, Doc Maynard began settling the land immediately south of Denny's. The first plats in Seattle were filed May 28, 1853, and Seattle was incorporated as a town in 1867, by which time it had 350 inhabitants. Credit:Wikipedia, "History of Seattle before 1900"
