Information on Henry Painter

Excerpts from 1739 Letter from A.D. Hiller:

Reference is made to your letter in which you request the Revolutionary War record of Henry Painter or Pointer of Virginia who had two sons. Christian who was born in 1798 in Botetourt County, Virginia, David and four daughters.

There is no claim for pension on file based upon service in the Revolutionary War of a Henry Painter. The data which follow were obtained from papers in pension claim W.5470, based upon service of Henry Painter in the Revolutionary War. This is the record of the only Henry Painter found in the Revolutionary War pension records of this office.

Henry Painter was a German by birth, the date of birth and names of his parents are not shown.

Henry Painter enlisted sometime in August 1776, in Hagerstown, Maryland, served as private in Captain Heyser's company. Colonels Haussegger's and Weltner's regiments, was in the battles of Trenton, (December 1776), Princeton, Germantown, and Monmouth and was discharged at the expiration of service of three years. Sometime after his discharge he reenlisted, served nine months in the Maryland troops, names of officers not stated, was at the siege of Yorktown and surrender of Cornwallis. At the time he was in service he was described as five feet five inches high, black hair, black eyes, and dark complexion.

Henry Painter was allowed pension on his application executed July 10,1818, at which time he was aged about seventy years and a resident of Nelson County, Virginia.

He died December 25, 1827, place of death not shown.

Henry Painter married in the fall of 1788, in Shenandoah County, Virginia, Sarah, her maiden name not stated.

The soldier's widow, Sarah Painter, was allowed pension on her application executed October 21, 1841, at which time she was aged about seventy years and a resident of Nelson County, Virginia.

On March 31, 1855, then a resident of Rockbridge County, Virginia, Sarah Painter applied for bounty land which was due under the Act of March 3, 1855, on account of service of Henry Painter in the Revolutionary War. On this application she was granted bounty land Warrant No.6034, for one hundred sixty acres under that act.

Sarah Painter died April 9, 1863, in Nelson County, Virginia.

Henry and Sarah Painter had ten children, George, their second child was born May 10,1792. Jacob, the only child to survive his mother, was living in Nelson County, Virginia, in 1869, aged fifty-three years. No other names of children are shown.

Joseph, the son of George Painter, and grandson of the soldier, was born August 7, 1841.
