Henry Hammond was baptised on 26th April 1814 at Pagham on the Sussex coast, son of Ann Hammond, formerly Woolgar, and her husband John Hammond, a blacksmith. Henry was the fourth of their eight children and the family lived in the hamlet of Lagness, on the road linking Pagham to the nearby city of Chichester. Henry's maternal grandparents also lived at Lagness at this time, whilst his paternal grandparents lived in the neighbouring parish of South Bersted (the parish which included the town of Bognor).
Henry's paternal grandmother, Sarah Hammond, was buried in 1827 at South Bersted. Henry's paternal grandfather, George Hammond, was buried in February 1836 at South Bersted, followed the next month by Henry's maternal grandfather, Thomas Woolgar, who was buried at Pagham.
Henry was married on 9th February 1839, aged 24, to Barbara Roy. She was also from Pagham. The month after their marriage Henry's last grandparent, Ann Woolgar, died.
Henry and Barbara went on to have four children baptised at Pagham between 1839 and 1847. They 1841 census finds Henry working as a blacksmith in the Aldwick area of Pagham parish, whilst Barbara and their first son, William, were staying a little way along the coast at Littlehampton on census night.
Henry and Barbara had a daughter named Eliza baptised in 1842, then a son named George baptised in 1843. Sadly Henry's only daughter, Eliza, died aged four in 1846. The following year Henry and Barbara had a son named James baptised.
Barbara died when she was only 28 years old, being buried at Pagham on 21st May 1848. There was probably an illness in the family; her five year old son George died three weeks later. Henry was left with two surviving sons to look after: William who was eight years old and James who was less than a year old.
The 1851 census finds Henry living with his parents, brother and two surviving sons at Lagness. Henry's mother died in 1858, followed by his father in 1860.
By 1861 Henry and his son James were lodging at Oving, just east of Chichester, with a wheelwright and blacksmith named Martha Tipper. Ten years later they were still living with Martha Tipper, but they had all moved to nearby Merston. By this time James was working as a blacksmith too.
Henry died aged 66 at the Westhampnett Union Workhouse. He was buried back at at Oving on 29th May 1880. He had outlived Barbara by 32 years.

This baptism has been linked to the Henry Hammond who married Barbara Roy on the basis that their marriage certificate names his father as John Hammond, blacksmith, whilst in the censuses after their marriage Henry consistently claimed to have been born around 1814 in Pagham.
