George Hammond was baptised on 30th April 1843 at Pagham in Sussex, son of Barbara Hammond, formerly Roy, and her husband Henry Hammond, a blacksmith. George was the third of their four children. George's mother died in 1848, being buried at Pagham on 21st May. Young George did not long outlived his mother; he was buried just over three weeks later on 13th June 1848, aged five.

   Needs to be confirmed at West Sussex Record Office. There is a discrepancy between the Sussex Online Parish Clerks database and FamilySearch's England Deaths and Burials database. As there is no corresponding entry in the civil deaths index for a 'Grace Hammond' locally at this time it is considered that FamilySearch is more likely to be correct and the name should be 'George Hammond'.
