William Hammond was baptised on 29th September 1839 at Pagham in Sussex, son of Barbara Hammond, formerly Roy, and her husband Henry Hammond, a blacksmith. William was the eldest of their four children. The family lived in the hamlet of Lagness at the time of William's baptism, which was also where William's paternal grandparents lived. The 1841 census finds William and his mother Barbara living in Littlehampton, a little way along the coast from Pagham, whilst William's father Henry was working at Aldwick in Pagham.

William's only sister, Eliza, died in 1846, aged four. In 1848, when William was only eight years old, his mother died, followed three weeks later by his brother George.

The 1851 census finds William, his surviving brother James and their father living with William's grandparents at Lagness. William was working as an agricultural labourer. He has yet to be traced after 1851.
