Facts and Events
James Hammond was baptised on 15th August 1847 at Pagham on the Sussex coast, son of Barbara Hammond, formerly Roy, and her husband Henry Hammond, a blacksmith. James was the couple's fourth child, although their only daughter had died before James was born, making him effectively the youngest of three boys. The family lived in the hamlet of Lagness, on the road linking Pagham with the nearby city of Chichester. James's paternal grandparents lived at Lagness at this time too.
When James was less than a year old his mother died, followed by his brother George three weeks later. The 1851 census finds James, his surviving brother William and their father living with James's grandparents at Lagness. James's grandmother died in 1858 and his grandfather died in 1860.
By 1861 James and his father were lodging at Oving, just east of Chichester, with a wheelwright and blacksmith named Martha Tipper. Ten years later they were still living with Martha Tipper, but they had all moved to nearby Merston. By this time James was working as a blacksmith too.
James has yet to be traced after 1871.
