Jane Hammond was baptised on 6th July 1816 at Pagham in Sussex, daughter of Ann Hammond, formerly Woolgar, and her husband John Hammond, a blacksmith. Jane was the fifth of eight children. The family lived in the hamlet of Lagness, on the road between Pagham and the nearby city of Chichester. Jane's maternal grandparents also lived in Lagness, whilst her paternal grandparents lived in the neighbouring parish of South Bersted, which included the town of Bognor.
Jane's paternal grandmother died in 1827. Both her grandfathers died in 1836, being buried in February and March. Her maternal grandmother died in 1839.
Jane appears in the 1841 living at Lagness with her parents, brother, and a lodger named William Patrick. Six year later Jane and William Patrick were married at Pagham.
After their marriage Jane and William moved to his native parish of Buriton in Hampshire. They had three children baptised between 1848 and 1852 at Buriton. The 1851 census finds them living at Bones Lane in Buriton, with William working as an under gardener.
Some time between 1852 and 1854 they moved to the nearby parish of Froxfield where they had a further two children baptised in 1854 and 1856. Back in Pagham, Jane's mother Ann died in 1858. Two years later Jane's father John died too.
The 1861 census finds Jane and William living at Week Green in Froxfield, with William described as groom and gardener. By 1871 they had moved a short distance within the parish of Froxfield to Slade Cottage.
Jane died aged 61, and was buried at Froxfield on 16th February 1878. Jane and William had been married for thirty years. William outlived her by twenty years.

This baptism has been linked to the Jane Hammond who married William Patrick on the basis that their marriage certificate names her father as John Hammond, blacksmith, whilst in the censuses after her marriage she consistently claimed to have been born around 1816 at Pagham.
