Alfred Hammond was baptised on 27th March 1821 at Pagham in Sussex, son of Ann Hammond, formerly Woolgar, and her husband John Hammond, a blacksmith. The family lived at the hamlet of Lagness in Pagham parish. Alfred appears in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses living with his parents and siblings at Lagness. By 1851 he was working as a blacksmith alongside his father.
Alfred died tragically at the age of 36, after falling in a ditch at North Bersted on his way home after an evening with friends in the nearby town of Bognor. His body was found the following morning, being 4th May 1857. He was buried back at Pagham.

BOGNOR. SINGULAR DEATH. - On Monday morning, as some men were going to work, at North Bersted, they perceived a man standing quite upright in a ditch, with the water above his shoulders. As quickly as possible he was got out, when it was found that it was Mr. Alfred Hammond, of Lagness. It appears he had been spending a few hours with some friends in Bognor on the previous evening, and in going home walked into the ditch and perished.
