Eliza Hammond was baptised on 7th May 1812 at Pagham in Sussex, daughter of Ann Hammond, formerly Woolgar, and her husband John Hammond, a blacksmith. Eliza was the third of their eight children. The family lived in the hamlet of Lagness on the road between Pagham and the nearby city of Chichester. Eliza's maternal grandparents also lived in Lagness, whilst her paternal grandparents lived in the neighbouring parish of South Bersted, which included the town of Bognor. Her paternal grandmother died in 1827. Both her grandfathers died early in 1836. Her maternal grandmother died in 1839.
Eliza appears in the 1841 census working as a housekeeper for three silk mercers on the High Street in South Bersted, presumably in the Bognor part of the parish. In 1847 Eliza witnessed her sister Jane's marriage back in Pagham.
On 21st May 1849, aged 37, Eliza married a shoemaker named William Richards, who was 33 and a widower. They do not appear to have had any children. The 1851 census finds them living at West Street in Bognor with William's mother. William was working as a cordwainer and employing one man. Back in Pagham Eliza's mother died in 1858, followed two years later by her father.
By 1861 Eliza and William were living at Black Rock in Bognor.
Eliza died aged 54, being buried at South Bersted on 29th November 1866. She was 54 years old. William survived her by sixteen years, and remarried six years after her death.
