William Patrick was baptised on 18th May 1817 at Buriton in Hampshire, son of a bricklayer named Richard Patrick and his wife Ann.

William appears in the 1841 census in the parish of Pagham on the Sussex coast, living with a family called Hammond. At this time William was working as an agricultural labourer. Six year later William was married at Pagham to one of the Hammond girls, Jane, who was about a year older than him.

After their marriage William and Jane returned to his native parish of Buriton, suggesting he still had connections there. They had three children baptised between 1848 and 1852 at Buriton. The 1851 census finds them living at Bones Lane in Buriton, with William working as an under gardener.

Some time between 1852 and 1854 they moved to the nearby parish of Froxfield where they had a further two children baptised in 1854 and 1856. The 1861 census finds them living at Week Green in Froxfield, with William described as groom and gardener. By 1871 they had moved a short distance within the parish of Froxfield to Slade Cottage.

Jane died in 1878, aged 61, and was buried at Froxfield. William and Jane had been married for thirty years. William continued to live at Slade Cottage after her death, appearing there in the 1881 census with his daughter Olive and two lodgers. He was still in the Slade area in 1891, living with his daughter Jane and a lodger. He was described as a retired gardener in 1891.

William died on 19th March 1898. Immediately before his death he was living at Blackmore in Froxfield. His estate was administered by another William Patrick (presumably his son), who was a civil servant, and was valued at £146 13s. 12.

ch. 18 May 1817, Buriton, Hampshire: William son of Richard & Ann Patrick

Needs to be confirmed at Hampshire Record Office. This baptism has been linked to the William Patrick who married Jane Hammond on the basis that on their marriage certificate his father's name was given as Richard Patrick, whilst in the censuses after their marriage he consistently claimed to have been born in Buriton around 1817.
