obituary-------------- GLENN B. McCONNELL Services for Col. Glenn B. McConnell, U.S. Armyretired, 79, who died Aug. 17 at Mary Greeley Hospital, will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, from Stevens Memorial Chapel. Rev. Cecil Wells and Father William Winlock will officiate. Burial will be in the Iowa State University Cemetery. Mr. McConnell was born March 10, 1901, in Hannah, N.D., to William and Ellen(Waddell) McConnell. He graduated from high school in Lake City, Minn., in 1917. On June 2. 1932, in Ft. Benning. Ga., he married Agnes S. Buffington. Afteroverseas duty in World War I he entered the Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. and graduated in 1924. McConnell served as an officer in the field artilleryduring his 35-year military career at Madison Barracks, N.Y., Ft. Benning Ga.,Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, Davenport and Ft. Sill, Okla. Following wartime service in the European theatre, McConnell served with the U.S. military government of Austria 1945-49, including a tour as American military governor of upperAustria. Col. McConnell became ROTC professor of military science and tacticsat Iowa State College, retiring in 1954. After briefly residing in Jewell, hejoined the department of engineering graphics, ISU, as an instructor. He retired from teaching as an assistant professor in 1971 and remained in Ames. He was a member of Rotary Club, First United Methodist Church and SAGE. Survivors include his wife, Agnes, of 1425 Harding Ave.; a daughter, Patricia, Ann Arbor,Mich.; two brothers, Karl, Superior, Wis., and Gordon, Ladysmith, Wis.; two sisters, Jean Martin, Ladysmith, Wis., and Clara McKay, Redwood Falls, Minn.; anda granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister. A memorial fund has been established in memory of the 1924 graduating class of West Point. Contributions may be left at Stevens Memorial Chapel or sent to 1425 Harding. McCONNELL Glenn B. McConnell, retired U.S. Army Colonel and a former Iowa State University faculty member, died August 17, 1980. Glenn was 79 years of age and had been a member of the Ames community for many years. Colonel McConnell was born March 10, 1901 in Hannah, North Dakota to William and Ellen McConnell. After finishing high school in Lake City, Minnesota, he entered the U.S. Army andwas stationed overseas during WWI. At the completion of the war, Glenn received an appointment to the Military Academy at West Point. He graduated as a comnissioned officer in 1924 and continued his distinguished military career. While stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia, he married Agnes Buffington. A partial list of his military assignments include Madison Barracks, New York; Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Davenport, Iowa and Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Following service in the European Theatre during WWII, McConnell served with the U.S. militarygovernment of Austria which included a tour as American military governor ofUpper Austria. Glenn McConnell was assigned to Iowa State College from 1949 to1954 as ROTC professor of military science and tactics.
