The father and mother and son had been planning that morning how things were to beconducted on the farm when Fred entered High School this fall and the boy had his clothes all planned out and all arrangements were completed that morning andall were in good spirits and a happy frame of mind. After breakfast, Fred went upstairs to change some of his clothing preparatory to going to the field tohelp his father hoe beans. A short time after a shot was heard, and when members of the family rushed upstairs they found Fred on the floor in a dieing condition. Mr. McConnell immediately hitched up a team and started to take the boyto town but he passed away before they arrived in town. Just how the accidentoccurred will never be known. That it was accidental is certain. He evidentlyhad been handling the gun because the cartridges were laid out on the bed as well as cleaning tools.
