GRAVE OF GENERAL GEORGE RUTLEDGE IN BLOUNTSVILLE CEMETERY:[2]
Revolutionary Soldier - General Geo. Rutledge. Born 1755, died 1813. Served with honor to himself and usefullness to his country, in the Army of the Revolution, as a member of the Convention that formed the Constitution of Tennessee in 1796; and subsequently, for many years, a Representative in the Legislature from Sullivan County. Honored and beloved in life, he died lamented by all who knew him. (The town of Rutledge, in Grainger County, was named in honor of Gen. George Rutledge - Ed.) Anna S. Rutledge; died in November, 1834, at the age of 70 years. She was wife of General Rutledge.

    Battle of Kings Mountain. George served under John Sevier in the North Carolina militia. George would assume command of this same group that would eventually become the Tennessee militia.

    "Gen George Rutledge came to the county (Sullivan Co TN) about 1777, and
    located on the small stream known as White Top. About three years later, he
    removed to the farm now occupied by his grandson, William G Rutledge, where he
    died in 1813. He commanded a company in Col Shelby's regiment at the battle of
    King's Mountain, was a member of the constituent convention of 1796 and the
    Territorial Assembly, and after the organization of the State, was a member of
    the Senate until his death."
