Where was Nancy living after her husband Robert's death?

Nancy Rutledge Cowan has not been found on an 1830 census record as head of household in Sullivan county, Tennessee, nor was she living on her original homestead after her husband Robert's death, therefore, she most likely was living with one of her children.

On 1830 census records that contain her seven children, she was not living with her daughter Eleanor Willett, or her sons James and William. According to Robert's will his son Andrew was living on "the plantation on which I now live", which was 220 acres of land in Sullivan county, Tennessee, and she is not listed in Andrew's household on the 1830 census. Her daughter Mary "Polly" Moss was still alive at the writing of Robert's will, but records concerning her are scarce, therefore, * according to a biographical sketch of his son Robert Shelby Cowan. Nancy was not living with her son George in 1840, but since she was buried in Sullivan county, Tennessee, this makes her removal to Missouri with George unlikely. Her son John has also been difficult to trace in records, therefore, the best case scenario is that Nancy was living with either her eldest daughter Polly or her youngest son John, at least, until records comes to light to prove otherwise.

  2. In 1777, Whitetop would have been found in Montgomery county established 1777 from Fincastle county abolished 1776. This is in reference to the current Whitetop community. If this residential area is actually referring to Whitetop Mountain, there are other possibilities for where they may have lived since it is found at the juncture of Grayson, Smyth and Washington counties.
