Facts and Events
Elizabeth Marshall was baptised on 24th May 1778 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of Elizabeth Marshall, formerly Arnold, and her husband John Marshall. The family lived at Chiltern Green, a hamlet some distance from the town of Luton itself, and close to the border with the neighbouring parish of Kimpton in Hertfordshire. On 15th July 1797, aged 19, Elizabeth was married at Kimpton to an agricultural labourer named Thomas Hawtree. He was 21 and originally from the town of St Albans, a few miles south of Kimpton and Chiltern Green. Having married in Kimpton, their first child was baptised in Luton in 1798. They then moved several miles south to Middlesex, where they had two children in Pinner, before moving again to the Palmers Green area, then in the parish of Edmonton. They had a further four children baptised at Edmonton, but at least one (probably two) of those died young. Elizabeth appears to have lived the rest of her life in Edmonton. She appears there in the 1841 census living with Thomas and her youngest son. Elizabeth died in 1842, aged 64. Thomas outlived her by about nine years, and remarried the year after her death.
