James Hawtree was born on 11th February 1818 at Edmonton in Middlesex, son of Elizabeth Hawtree, formerly Marshall, and her husband Thomas Hawtree, an agricultural labourer. The family lived at Palmers Green, then a hamlet removed from the village. No burial record has yet been found for James, but it seems highly likely that he died young, as his parents named their next son James too.
