Edward Samuel Woodfield was born in 1845 at Warwick and baptised there at the parish church of St Mary on 11th May 1845. He was the son of a shoe maker named William Woodfield and his wife Elizabeth. Edward appears in the 1851 and 1861 censuses living with his parents and siblings on Saltisford, the main street leading out of Warwick to the north-west. By 1861 he was working as a carpenter's apprentice.

In 1867, aged 22, Edward married Emma Bastock, who was 25. Although they were both from Warwick, they married ten miles to the north in Coventry, at St Michael's Church (later the Cathedral). They returned to Warwick after their marriage, where they had seven children between 1870 and 1882, although three of the children died young. From before 1874 until after 1901 they lived at Paradise Street, in the Packmores area of Warwick, north of the railway line. Edward worked as a carpenter and joiner, whilst Emma was a laundress.

Emma died in 1901, aged 59. At the time of the 1911 census Edward was a patient in the infirmary of the Warwick Union Workhouse. He died on 2nd August 1912, aged 67, in the Warwickshire County Lunatic Asylum at Hatton. He was buried back at Warwick Cemetery.
