April 18, 1906; 5:12 a.m.: San Francisco Earthquake - magnatude 7.8 - A pipe fell on Ed's legs and he developed arthritis and could not work. Due to Ed's health, he and his family moved to California (1920 or 1921) for 7 years (source: Life Story of Cora Paulyne Saunders Leopold).

Edward's birth records cannot be located due to all vital records at the time were destroyed by fire during the 1906 earthquake and fire.

Edward and his friend Dale came to Joseph City, Arizona to work for a man named Fred Harvey and to also paint the Keems Canyon School, where he met Cora. Cora lived in a hogan while teaching there.

In 1936 Ed and Cora bought the Central Auto Court 1 Holbrook (now called the Pow Wow Motel). Later they leased the Court because of Ed's health and moved to "The Ranch" (Homestead on the South edge of Holbrook). (Source: Life Story of Cora Paulyne Saunders Leopold)

Edward moved to Nogales, Arizona because of a Mexican doctor that could help him with his arthritis.
