About David Nelson

David Nelson was in Augusta County, Virginia prior to 1742, as he was listed on the "List of Musters" of Capt. James Cathey, which lists able-bodied men in the local miiltia. He was listed in the "Processioning List" in 1760 with several settlers that were living in the area near Muddy and Naked Creek, on the North Branch of the Shenandoah River. David's son John died in 1765, and David was named the administrator of his son's estate. In the same year, David was exempted from working on roads, indicating that he waa likely too old to endure the work of clearing roads. David Nelson acquired a tract of land from Benjamin Logan in 1772, but it is clear that he likely had acquired other property many years prior. The area that David Nelson lived became Rockingham County in 1778, and other records, possibly including his will, are likely located there or a successor county, perhaps Pendleton (now in West Virginia). Besides his son John, the identity of his wife or other children are apparently not contained in Augusta County, Virginia records. Additional research is necessary.
