Overview
The first record for David Cowan (32) that has been identified is for a land purchase in Laurens District, SC 1788. He is commonly said to have married Celia Garrison, but the basis for this is unknown. David made his will in 1826, and presumably died about that time. Findagrave includes an entry for him indicating that he is buried in Ora ARP cemetery in Laurens, SC. No gravestone is shown and his actual DOD remains unsupported beyond the date of his will.
His will lists the following children:
- James COWAN
- Magdelene COWAN
- Francis COWAN
- Celia COWAN
- Rebecca COWAN
- Anne COWAN
- John COWAN
An eighth child, David, is sometimes included in family trees for this couple. The basis for this appears to be that a probate rcord shows money paid to William Garrett, guardian of David Cowan, Jr. [1]
David may have been the immigrant ancestor of this line. One of his daughters, Mary Cowan, married Joseph McCullough in Greenville Co SC. Joseph is believed to have come to America from County Antrim in northern Ireland. McCullough descendents retain a family tradition [2] that the Cowans also came from County Antrim.

References
- ↑ Copy of will and probate recorded needed. It is possible that David Jr. is a son of David (32), and just not mentioned in his will. Its also possible that he is the son of someone else. Examining the actual will and probate records would help clarify this.
- ↑ "In a book published about 1900" per Gary Cowan, personal communication to WMWILLIS, 7 October 2013. Need the name of the book, and reference information.
- ↑ Apparently the McCullough's have been traced back to a specific parish in County Antrim. Perhaps a search of the county records would yield information for David Cowan. In anycase, substantiating information is needed for this family tradition.
