David Bennett was born about 1766 in Augusta Co., Virginia (now Pendleton Co., West Virginia). His parents may be Joseph Sleeth Bennett and Abigail Lee Hunter. On 5 April 1791 in Harrison Co., Virginia (now WV ) he married to Christina Bumgardner, daughter of Godfrey and Gertrude (Courtwright?) Bumgardner. This marriage was the first ever officiated by the Reverend Joseph Cheuvront. They were parents of six children: Stephen, Simon, Margaret, Mary, Rebecca, and Sarah (in order of birth}. Following the death of David his last five minor children were bound to the care of Jacob Bennett (believed to be his brother), and to the Rev. Joseph Cheuvront, son-in-law of Moses Ellsworth.
David Bennett was one of the trustees selected to oversee the building of the Ellsworth Meeting House (Church) to be build on the land donated by John and Mary (Richards) Ellsworth for a church and cemetery. This land was located about one and a half mile from present day Good Hope Community, Harrison Co., V/WV. The ME church built about 1802 is long gone and the cemetery is now known as Bethel Cemetery.
