Notes
- In 1774, Cornelius, William and James McGuire had land surveys a few days apart in Botetourt County, Virginia.
- James' land was located near the confluence of the Greenbriar and New Rivers, near present Hinton, WV, while Cornelius and Williams lands were located a few miles south, near the confluence of Indian Creek and New River.
- Cornelius and William had their lands surveyed on the very same day, about four years prior to Williams marriage to Mary Ann Shirley. This suggests that William lived near his birth family, as he must have relied on his mother and sisters for housemaking chores before his marriage in 1778.
- Also, in 1774, William and Cornelius and John McGuire all of Botetourt County, VA, participated in a military expedition against the Shawnee Indians at present Point Pleasant, WV.
- William, Thomas, James, Cornelius Jr, and Christina all had sons named Cornelius, and most of these sons were nicknamed Neely.
