MOORE, CHARLES, No. S30599. Private, N.C. Line, born 4-15-1761 in Rockbridge Co., VA*, was living in that County when he entered service in 1781. After he had served a tour, he moved to N.C. and served again. Later removed to Fayette Co., KY, then to Adair Co. Pension began 3-4-1831. Certificate Issued 8-21-1833

Kentucky, Adair County: to wit On this 9th day of August 1832 personally appeared before the Justices of the County Court of Adair now sitting Charles Moore a resident of Adair County aged seventy-two years who, being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated. That he volunteered in the year 1776 under Captain Paxton [sic, I think this is most likely a reference to either Capt. John Paxton of the Rockbridge VA militia or Capt. Robert Patton of the Burke County, NC, militia who is known to have served under Charles McDowell] and was at the battle of Guilford [March 15, 1781] under the command of Colonel McDowell three months as a volunteer after which battle he was called down to Petersburg Virginia under Captain Gray [James Gray] drafted the tour was about 3 months. After which he went out under Captain Trimble [William Trimble] under Colonel Surveyor [sic, John Sevier] & fell in with General Marion [Francis Marion] and was at the taking of 90 prisoners at Moncks Corner in North Carolina [sic South Carolina] four months tour. I had three discharges first from Captain Paxton, the second from Captain Trimble the third from Captain Gray, the above named discharges are lost and it is completely out of my power to find them. He recollects the name of General Stevens or Stevenson he has no documentary evidence by which he is enabled to prove his Service. He knows of no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his services. He declares that his whole service was about nine or ten months. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State or (if any) only on that of the agency of the state of Kentucky. (Samuel Wilson, a clergyman, and Lemuel Walker gave the standard supporting affidavit.) By way of Amendment to his original Declaration and to fulfill the requisitions of the Department he states that he was born in Rockbridge County & State of Virginia on the 15th of April 1761. That he has a record of his age at his residence in this County. That he lived in a Rockbridge County Virginia when he entered the United States service, remained in the same place some time after part of his service, then removed to the State of North Carolina lived there about 18 months then removed to the County of Fayette or the part of the Country where Fayette now lies it was before Kentucky was a State lived about that Section of the Country some time then removed to the County of Adair where he now resides. He states that he is known in his neighborhood by Samuel Wilson & Joseph G. Walker who have subscribed & sworn to the Certificate and next to his Original Declaration & divers others to wit Thomas Stotts, Alexander Gilmore besides a great many more that would testify to his Character as a man of veracity & their belief of his services as a Soldier of the Revolution. Adair County Personally appeared before me the undersigned a Justice of the Peace in and for the said County Charles Moore who being duly sworn, deposes and saith, that by reason of old age and consequent loss of memory, he cannot swear positively as to the precise length of his Service, but according to the best of his recollection he served not less than the periods mentioned below, and in the following grades: For 10 months I served as a private in the militia service and for such service I claim a pension. Given under my hand this 4th May 1833. S/ Daniel Suddarth, JP
