Also called "Benoni" Benjamin S. Lamar sold the land he inherited from his father, William Bishop in Maryland, April 12, 1815 and moved to Breckinridge County, KY (now Hancock County). Before moving to Kentucky, Benjamin was granted "power of attorney" for his sister, Susannah (Lamar) House September 10, 1814. He was asked to represent her during the settlement of their father's estate and to receive her part of the estate. At that time, Susannah was living in Breckinridge County, Kentucky.

Benjamin S. purchased a farm in Breckinridge County, KY on October 22, 1816. It was situated along the Ohio River in the Troy Bend Community, just opposite Troy, Indiana. It was on this farm where Benjamin and other members of his family were buried. The deed to this farm reads as follows:

"This indenture made this 22nd day of October 1816, between Norbourne B. Beall of the County of Jefferson and State of Kentucky and State aforesaid of the other part, witnesseth that the same Norbourne B. Beall for and in consideration of the sum of $ ))) current money to him in hand paid.

The receipts whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted, bargained and sold and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell, alien, convey and confirm unto him the said Benjamin S. Lamar, his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land situate, containing 437 acres is part of a lot known on the plot of Maupin and myself, by Lot No. 5, and bounded as follows, Viz: beginning at the foot of the hills on the lower line of said lot at Maxsey's Corner . . thence with Maxey's line to the beginning with the appurtenances to have and to hold the said bargained and sold premises and appurtenances, to the only proper use and benefit of him the said Norbourne B Beall doth covenant with the said Benjamin s. Lamar, his premises in fee simple have good right and lawful authority to bargain and sell the same in manner and form above written and that he will warrant and forever defend the same to the said Benjamin S. Lamar,his heirs and assigns forever from the claims of all and every person or persons whatever.

In testimony whereof he, the said Norbourne B. Beall hath hereto set his hand and seal the date first written.

Benjamin S. Lamar was very active in real estate and other property transactions in Breckinridge and Hancock County, KY. Some of the more significant transactions, as recorded in the Breckinridge and Hancock County Court Clerk's Offices are as follows:

"I do hereby certify that Benjamin S. Lamar personally appeared before me and made oath that he had not brought any Negro slaves with him, with the intent of selling them, and will bring no slaves to this state with the intent to sell them, given under my hand this 23rd day of September 1816."

"This indenture made in the year of our Lord 1818 between Hannah E. Lewis, Executrix of the last will and testament of John Lewis, deceased, of Breckenridge County and State of Kentucky of the one part and Benjamin S. Lamar of the same County and State of the other part.

Whereas, the above named John Lewis, in his life time sold to a certain Emanuel Viner a piece of land containing 150 acres which will hereinafter particularly described and gave a title bond therefore to said Emanuel Viner in the name of his son, John, then an infant, and received of the said Emanuel Viner, part of the purchase money say about $150 and notes in hand for the balance which notes of hand not being paid off when they became due and the said Emanuel Viner having left the County and transferred the aforesaid title bond to Joseph Kellenbarger who likewise refusing to pay the balance of the purchase money a suit in chancery was instituted by the Executrise aforesaid against the said Emanuel Viner, John Viner and others in the Breckinridge Circuit Court in which a decree was pronounced at the April term of said Court.

James Murray and Nathaniel Maxey were appointed by the Court to sell the land for $225.59 Twenty acres of said land was sold to Benjamin S. Lamar to be taken in a square from out of the lower corner of said 150 acres on the Ohio River and the said Joseph Kellenbarger had afterwards sold the balance of the 150 acres to Benjamin S. Lamar paid to Hannah E. Lewis $225.59

The land is bounded on the bank of the Ohio River, being a corner of a lot of land out of a survey in the name of Samuel Beall for William Bishop Lamar, thence down the Ohio River as it meanders . . . to a Jennings back to the lot of land owned by William Bishop Lamar."

"This indenture made the 9th day of February in the year of our Lord 1823 between John Gates and Lydda Gates, his wife, of the County of Breckinridge and State of Kentucky of the one part and Benjamin S. Lamar of the County and State aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that the said John Gates and Lydda, his wife, for and in consideration of the just and full sum of $341.25 to them in hand paid by the said Benjamin S. Lamar and $1,819.00 the receipt of which money the said John Gates and Lydda, his wife, do hereby acknowledge have granted, bargained and sold, aliened, enforced, conveyed and confirmed and by these presents do grant, bargain and sell, alien inform, convey and confirm to the said Benjamin S. Lamar a certain tract or parcel of land containing 68.25 acres being a part of a tract of land granted to John May purporting to contain 6,000 acres by patent bearing the date the 23rd day of April 1787 and which tract of land was conveyed by John May and Polly Eppey, late Polly May, and Daniel Eppey, her husband, heir and devisee of John May and Ann, his wife, to Norbourne B. Beall, Matilda A. Galt and Matilda Maupin by indenture bearing the date of the 18th day of November 1812, and recorded in the Office of the General Court of the Commonwealth and which parcel of land hereby conveyed, John May allotted and conveyed to said Norbourne B. Beall with other parcels by William C. Galt and Matilda A. Galt, his wife, late Matilda A. Beall, and Richard A. Maupin on behalf of his infant daughter, Matilda Maupin, daughter and only child, and heir of Harriet Maupin, late Harriet Beall by indenture bearing the date of 1812 . . . "

"Mortgage issued to Neal McMullin. A mortgage of $500.00 on a certain Negro boy named Jerry about 16 or 17 years of age for 3 years." signed: Benjamin S. Lamar

'This indenture made February 26, 1825 between Benjamin S. Lamar and Nancy Ann, his wife, of the County of Breckinridge and Aquilla W. Sampson of the County aforesaid of the other part. (Aquilla W. Sampson is presumed to be a brother-in-law).

Witnesseth this Benjamin S. Lamar and Nancy Ann, his wife, for and in consideration of the sum of $120 sold to said Sampson a certain tract or parcel of land containing 120 acres being a part of a tract of land granted to John May by Patent 6,000 acres the said 120 acres being a part of a certain tract of land containing 437 acres deeded to Benjamin S. Lamar by Norbourne B. Beall October 22, 1816"

"I, Benoni s. Lamar, have sold unto Thomas Blincoe and Marean T. Lamar for $2,008.18 the following property, Viz: One tract of land containing 1555 acres, a part of a tract of 437 acres deeded by Norbourne B. Beall of Jefferson County, Kentucky to me, the said Benoni S. Lamar and being the remaining part of the tract out of which was sold to A. W. Simpson 183 acres, W. Gates 99 acres and my present place of residence.

Also, one tract of land containing 68.26 acres purchased and deeded to me by John Gates in 1823 . . . Also, one Negro man named Andrew age 24, one Negro woman named Polly age 23 with a child age 18 months, one Negro boy named James age 15, one Negro girl named Lucy age 13, one Negro girl named Sara Ann age 11. Also, one bay mare and colt,,, one bay mare, one bay stud horse, two bay yearling colts, together with three cows and calves, 20 head of hogs, including sows, barrows and shoats, and all of my household and kitchen furniture, except necessary cooking utensils, one bed and furniture, one loom and all of my farming equipment, except one plow and gear, one hoe and axe. Also, all the right, title and interest which I hold in the right of my wife to the estate of Benjamin B. Blincoe, deceased."

"Thomas Blincoe and Marean T. Lamar have become my security jointly to the heirs of William House deceased, for my true and faithful performance of my guardianship for the payment of $1,643.18.

Also, the said Marean T. Lamar has become my security in the Bank for the sum of $175 and replevied an execution in favor of Stephen Chenault for $150. Also, debt to David Curtis of $40 (1826)."

"Whereas, I, Benoni S. Lamar, indebted to Neal McMullin in the sum of $800 in special sale, do sell a certain tract or parcel of land containing 150 acres which is bounded as follows: to wit, being cornered to a lot laid out of a survey in the name of Samuel Beall of this is a part for William Bishop Lamar . . thence to the corner of the aforesaid lot. If the $800 is paid off in two years, the property reverts to Benoni S. Lamar. Date: July 10, 1826."

"Whereas, I, Benoni S. Lamar, mortgage to James Dupuey one Negro man named Natt for $400 for one year." Signed: Benoni S. Lamar

"This indenture made and entered into this 21st day of June, 1826, between Benoni S. Lamar and Nancy Ann Lamar, his wife, of Breckinridge County and State of Kentucky of the one part and William Gates of said County and State, aforesaid, of the other part witnesseth that the said Benoni S. Lamar and Nancy Ann, his wife, for and in consideration of the sum of $160..87 to him and her in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have this day bargained and sold and by these presents to grant, bargain, sell, alien, convey and confirm unto him the said William Gates, his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in the County of Breckinridge and State of Kentucky near the Ohio River containing 99 acres which is part of a lot conveyed by Norbourne B. Beall to Benoni S. Lamar.

"This mortgage for 160 acres issued to James Monks and Marean T. Lamar by Benjamin S. Lamar March 29, 1827:

March 29th, 1827 mortgage issued and signed; April 28th, 1827 $350. due 30 days after date; May 1st, 1827 $350. due one year after date; May 1st, 1827 $350. due two years after date."

"We this day, August 11, 1829, relinquish all the rights, title and interest that we may have held by this mortgage on any other instrument between us and Benjamin S. Lamar to the Negro boy Andrew and women Polly, Lucy, Lenisey and Malinda, and the child of Polly, as witnesseth our hand this day, August 11, 1829."

"Benoni S. Lamar and Nancy Ann, his wife, sold to Robert C. Beauchamp 266 acres of land bordering the Ohio River and Lead Creek, this 24th day of August, 1829."

Greathouse."

"Benoni S. Lamar, Thomas Blincoe and James Foreman were appointed to appraise the estate of James Monk December 9, 1833."
