At the time of her father's death in 1849, she was only six years old. At that time her stepfather, Jonathan Sawyer, was appointed as her legal guardian. Sometime later, John C. Martin, her brother-in-law, was appointed as her legal guardian. She lived with John C. and Elizabeth Jane Martin in Cloverport and Hawesville, Kentucky. On June 2, 1854, Susan sold her one-sixth share of the 150 acres of land in her father's estate to Daniel McCarty Payne for ^625.31. Evidently, Susan also heired a Negro slave named Jerry because there is recorded in the Hancock County Court House the following statement: "December 7, 1855, recorded by John C. Martin: The hire of Jerry for 1854 $ 50.00 Amount received from Daniel McCarty Payne $625.00 The hire of Jerry for 1855 $ 58.75 One half of a note on myself to Jonathan Sawyer, guardian of Susan Tramel Lamar $775.00 As recorded in the William P. Martin Family Bible, Susan Tramel Lamar was married to John C. Martin July 26, 1857 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky by the Reverend G. N. Harders. John C. Martin was previously married to Susan's older sister, Elizabeth Jane (Lamar) Martin. Elizabeth died in 1856. John C. Martin was also Susan's legal guardian until she reached adulthood. Susan T. Lamar is recorded in the 1860 U.S. Census of Hancock County as the wife of John C. Martin. At that time, her brother, John S. Lamar, was living with John C. Martin. He was employed as a dry goods merchant in the town of Hawesville. Susan T. (Lamar) Martin died January 31, 1870 and John C. Martin died in 1900.
