Facts and Events
John and Elizabeth Jane lived in Breckenridge County for a period of time and then moved to Hancock County. John was employed as a merchant in Hawesville for more than 20 years. On December 28, 1848, Elizabeth sold the one-sixth share of the land she received as a part of her father's estate to Jonathan and Nancy Ann Sawyer for $175.28. Nancy Ann Sawyer was her mother. Elizabeth and John Martin owned property in Cloverport and Hawesville, Kentucky. In 1855, they sold a lot in Cloverport to Elizabeth's brother, John S. Lamar. Shortly after the death of Elizabeth's father, Benoni S. Lamar, in 1849, his two infant children, Susan Tramel and John S. Lamar, were placed under the legal guardianship of John C. and Elizabeth Jane Martin. John was their brother-in-law and Elizabeth was their sister. Evidently, Elizabeth Jane, died shortly after the birth of her son, Benjamin F. Martin. At that time, her sister, Susan Tramel Lamar was 22 years old and her brother, John S. Lamar was 20 years old.
