Disambiguation

Not to be confused with Benjamin Erwin (abt. 1745-1810) of Rockingham County, Virginia, who married Mary "Polly" Curry.

In spite of an extensive search the parents of the Rev. Benjamin Irvine are still unknown, even though he has been identified as a son of Edward & Mary again and again. While Edward had a son Benjamin, already mentioned here, he was some twenty years younger than the Rev. Benjamin. The Rev. Benjamin was prominent in both Augusta and Rockingham Counties as a Presbyterian minister for many years, before removing to Madison County, KY, where in died, circa 1827.[6]

After seven years without a pastor, the Mossy Creek congregation, together with the congregation at Cooks Creek, issued a call in October of 1779 to the Reverend Benjamin Erwin. Mr. Erwin, who is believed to have been from the local region, had placed himself under the care of the Hanover Presbytery in 1778. Mr. Erwin took the call under advertisement and at the following meeting of the Presbytery he indicated his acceptance of it. John Davies, the commissioner representing the two congregations, urged that he be ordained and installed as soon as possible. On June 20, 1780, he was ordained and appointed to serve for three Sundays as supply minister to people residing on the South Branch of the Potomac.
