• Page 65.--14th November, 1761. James Bailey (Baley, Bailly) to Benj. Bennett, blacksmith, £40, 175 acres in Fork of James River, joining Samuel McDowell's tract. (Note: assuming that Benjamin had recently reached adulthood, his birthdate was probably sometime between 1738-1740).

• Page 436.--22d October, 1765. John ( ) Taylor and Mary ( ) to Benj. Bennet, £45, 330 acres in Forks of James; corner Michael Finney's old survey. Teste: John Leo.

• Benjamin Bennett acquired 245 acres from a suit in Chancery Court in 1780 vs. Beverley (prob. Robert Beverley, son of William), as indicated in the disposition of 1783, below:

• Page 10.--18th March, 1783. Benjamin Bennett, of Rockbridge, son and heir-at-law of Richard Bennett, deceased, to Rev. Archibald Scott, 245 acres gained by Benjamin from Beverley by a suit in chancery in 1780 in Augusta County Court, being the plantation where Wm. McKnab and Jacob Gabert formerly lived.

Disposition of Land from Rockbridge County Records:

• Sep 3, 1786 - Thomas Ratliff of Rockbridge bought 17 acres from Benjamin Bennett on the northwest side of a branch of the North River, on a line with James McClung (Rockbridge Deeds A, p. 584).

• Vol. 1 - MAY 19, 1767. - Page (59) Commission for private examination of Catherine, wife of Benj. Bennett.

• Vol. 1 - MAY, 1780 (A). - Bennett vs. McNabb.--Chancery. Writ, 3d December, 1771. Benjamin Bennett (orator), eldest son and heir of Richard Bennett. Richard died intestate, 1743, leaving orator an infant. Shortly before his death he bought 300 acres in Beverley's Manor, but died before getting a deed. Richard's widow, Martha, married William McNabb. William McNabb put two of his sons, James and Samuel, in possession of the land. Bill for title and accounting of personal estate. Richard had other children besides Benjamin. William Thompson, aged 62 (deposes 16th May, 1773), was brother-in-law of Martha Bennett McNabb.

Morton, Oren F, A HISTORY OF ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, VIRGINIA:

Bennett, Benjamin heirs 1779. Mary (married John Berrisford); John (married Mary Ward); Margaret (married John Robinson); James (married Agnes Arnold); Ezekiel (married Jane Kenady); Lydia (married Frances Beresford) and (probably Benjamin Jr.) Richard Bennett, father of Benjamin Bennett, died intestate 1743 before getting deed to 300 acres in Beverly Manor, Martha, widow of Richard, later married William McNabb.

(Note: Benjamin Bernet was husband of Catherine Berrisford. Two other deeds regarding sale of Berrisford land confirm this, Ann Berrisford was second wife of James Arnold - had son Berrisford Arnold, killed at River Raisin.)
