Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Page 147.--27th May, 1777. Robert Williams and Margaret to Bartholomew Older, of Lancaster County, Penna., on Yeager's Branch of Smith's Creek. Teste: John Thomas, Abraham Raiff, Tom Raiff, Martin Bowman.

Land Records in Virginia:

  • On October 15, 1779 - Bartholomew Alder bought a Land Warrant from the commonwealth of Virginia. Both Bartholomew and John's names are on the back of the Warrent. In November 1780 Kentucky County was divided into three counties but they were still all part of Virginia. It wasn't until 1792 that Kentucky became a state. When Bartholomew settled his wife and children in southwestern Virginia before heading on into Kentucky County, they had horses and cattle. John was a teenager when Bartholomew and Hanna sold their land in Rockingham County and headed for southern Virginia.
Note: In March of 1782, when he was captured by the Indians, Jonathan Alder said his half brother John was a man grown and that his father, Bartholomew Alder was dead. Bartholomew's land was surveyed and registered by July of 1788. (Source: Ancestry Message Board)

Records in Kentucky:

  • 1791: John Alder, heir-at-law of Bartholomew Alder, assigned the survey (on the back side) to Matthias Lain for value received. (Source: Ancestry Message Board)
