District of [Kentucky] S.S. On this [17] day of [July] 1821 personally appeared in open court being a court of record made such by a the state of Kentucky for the said Circuit Ambrose Jones aged about Sixty years resident in Floyd County in said Circuit who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his Oath declare that he served in the revolutionary war as follows – In the 16th Regiment first commanded by Col. Grason [sic: William Grayson] & next by Col. Nath’l Gist [Nathaniel Gist] in Capt. Thomas Bell’s company afterwards commanded by Capt. Robin Blackenridge [probably Alexander Breckinridge BLWt287-300] in the Virginia line his original declaration was dated about June 1818 [see endnote]. He cannot recollect precisely the time of his enlistment but served three years And I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818: and that I have not since that time by gift sale or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of Congress entitled “An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land & navy service of the United States in the Revolutionary War” passed on the 18 day of March 1818 & that I have not, nor has any person in trust for me any property or securities contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed. Farming tools 5 I have 4 head of horse beasts worth $120 8 head of Cattle 48 5 head of sheep 5 20 or 30 head of Hogs 25 Pot mettle 10 House furniture 5 218 [see endnote] He is a farmer when able to follow that occupation but has not been able to labour at any thing for the last 7 years he has had a [undeciphered word] of his left eye that has much impaired his sight. He has a wife & 2 children reside with him. His wife is old & infirm & able to do but verry little. One of his sons is 18 or 20 years old & is healthy the younger is 16 and is addicted to fits. is unable to labour & is rather an incumberance than a benefit Ambrose Jones
Morgan County and Circuit sct on this 1st day of November 1825 personally appeared Ambrose Jones in open court being a court of record being made so by the laws of the state and having power to fine & imprison for the circuit of Morgan resident in the county of Morgan state of Ky formerly a resident of Floyd county the said county of Morgan being cut off off Floyd County and composing a part of Floyd county until the year 1822 – aged 75 years or thereabouts who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the acts of congress of the 18th March 1818 and the 1st of May 1820 that he the said Jones enlisted for the term of three years some time in the year – to the best of his the said Jone’s recollection in the year 1777 but he has no date to refer to to fixt the precise date but thinks it was about a year before the battle of Monmouth [28 Jun 1778]. that he enlisted in the state of Virginia county of Augusta in the company commanded by captain Thomas Bell and shortly after he joined the Army he was transfered to captain Robert Brecenridge’s company both of which companies belonged to the regiment commanded by Colonel Grayson his given name not recollected it being the 16th Virginia regiment in the line of the state of Virginia on the Virginia continental establishment. That he continued to serve in said corps until he was taken prisoner at the seige of Charlestown [Charleston] South Carolina when the place was taken by them [12 May 1780] that he escaped from the British and arrived at home eighteen days before the time of his enlistment had expired that he obtained a regular discharge from Colonel [Thomas] Posey in Staunton Virginia which has been lost that his name has not been placed on the pension list that his original declaration is on file in the war department [Oath similar to the above follows.]

That since the exhibition of my first schedule the following changes have been made in my property. The mare mentioned in the former schedul valued at $40 dollars in conjunction with her colt I exchanged for another mare to one John Howerton which mare I exchanged for the horse I now own to one Richard Fereman[?] mentioned in the present Schedule. the colt I disposed of in part pay for the land mentioned in the present shedule That by profession he is a farmer that he has to depend for a support upon his own labour with the means mentioned in the annexed schedule that his family consists of himself and his wife Martha Jones aged 56 years very much afflicted with some disease of a Rheumatic character That by voilent pains she has lost the use of one of her eyes and is unable to spin or do any labour of that kind only being able to sew and knit a little and is not able to do much towards the labour necessary in the family and is unable to support herself that he himself is unable to labour for a support being nearly overcome by old age and various infirmities and is not able to support himself without assistance from his country or being a burden upon his friends and relation.
NOTES: A paper in the file dated 4 Jan 1910 notes that the original claim of 1818 was missing. The Pension Office generally considered an applicant not entitled to a pension under the acts of 1818 and 1820 if he had property worth more than $200.
On 30 Jan 1840 in Morgan County KY Martha Jones, 74, applied for a pension stating that she was married to Ambrose Jones by a Baptist preacher in Greenbrier County, (West) Virginia on 30 Dec 1784, and her husband died 12 Jun 1833. The application was supported by a statement by John Jones, age 45, who also certified that the family record transcribed below was written by William Jones and Uriah Cottle in his father’s bible. With her application is a copy of the certificate of marriage of Ambrose Jones to Martha “Crage.” A letter dated 12 June 1845 that another one of the children, Polly Jones, was claiming additional pension money over the objections of the other heirs.
