Gaines, Ambrose - entered service 1780 in Augusta County, Virginia, substitute for father Robert of that County; father entered service later & served at siege of Yorktown; Ambrose granted Pension abt. age 69 in Sullivan County, Tennessee in 1832, where he moved a few days after marriage 6/9/1792 to Mary, Stokes County, North Carolina; soldier died 1/11/1839 or 12/1840; widow was born 12/26/1771; granted Pension 1844 in Sullivan County, Tennessee; family bible births: Samuel D. Gaines 10/9/1822 (married 9/1/18--), Sarah E. Gaines 12/2/1813, Francis Henry Gaines 11/24/1832; family bible marriages: Letitia Childres 9/14/1812, Judith McHenry 11/17/18--, Mildred Vincent 2/13/1818, Maria Worldly 9/9/1824, Louisa Brown 10/10/1829, & Mat M. Gaines 11/11/1830; query letter in file 1914 from descendant Mrs. Kate Worley Kimbrough, states soldier was born 7/6/1763; query letter in file states soldier married Mary Moore who died 1863 in Sullivan County, Tennessee.
