Facts and Events
Alfred was born in Berlin Heights, Erie Co., Ohio. This fact is recorded on his Civil War Pension papers. Michael James Miller. [email protected], Updated: Sun Sep 8 12:16:43 2002 lists birthdate as 15 May 1829. His notes:Alfred served in the Civil War in the 21st OVI. He enlisted on 2-8-1864. His discharge papers describe Alfred as 24 years old, 5' 11" tall. He had a dark complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair. Alfred obviously lied about his age to get in. To put the war into perspective: Grant took over as commander of the Union Army in 1-1864. The battles of Gettysburg, and Vicksburg were already fought. The 21st OVI already fought at Chickamauga were one of Mary's brothers John Croshaw died. Alfred joined Grant in his march to Atlanta. One major battle was Kenesaw. The story told to me by Marie Meach tells of Mary (Alfred's wife) going down to the Ohio River to catch a boat to go where ever Alfred was lying seriously ill. Mary nursed Alfred back to health. She was called the GREAT WHITE WOMAN for her service to Alfred and other men at the floating Hospital at New Albany, IN. Alfred injured his left leg in Graysville, GA. He contracted lung fever, while in the hospital recovering. Along with chronic diarrhea he was shipped by train to Chattanooga, TN. These ailments plagued him the rest of his life. He mustered out in 1865. Thomas Cyrus Miller, Alfred's nephew, (Isaac and Clarissa) also mustered out in Weston. In the 1850 census, Erie Co. Berlin TWP., Alfred Miller is listed as head of house with a sister Jane age 17, and their mother Sally age 60. In Norwalk, Ohio which is the Huron Co. seat, I found a record of land transfer to a Sally Miller. In a conversation with Marie Meach Thompson on 6-22-01 she stated that Alfred was married to another woman before Mary Jane Croshaw. He had one son who is believed to have lived in California. Alfred's pension papers also confirm this. Alfred, Jane and Sally moved from Erie Co. to Huron Co., Ohio after the 1850 census. Alfred married Mary Ann Morehead 9-14-1851 in Huron Co. Leroy L. Miller was born to them on 1-17-1855. Mary Ann died 9-27-1857 in Huron Co. Alfred and Leroy moved to Weston, Ohio and Alfred married Mary Jane Croshaw on 11-19-1859. They are listed in the 1860 census for Wood Co. Ohio. Alfred and Mary lived in Weston the rest of their lives. TGCall Family group sheet cites Cemetery Records, Heyman Rd., Sherman Twp. Huron Co. Ohio. Not the child of Jacob F. Miller & Dicey Weaver found on the IGI References
