Abt 1740 - Alexander Montgomery is born, possibly in Orange County North Carolina.

Abt 1760 - He married Martha Walker, daughter of John Walker and Ann Houston.

1768 - Amherst, VA - Alexander's father dies and leaves him 250 acres of land on Buck Creek.

Date? - Amherst, VA - Alexander sells 250 ac on Buck Creek to his brother-in-law Robert Barnett, of Amherst County, Virginia.

Date? - Orange, NC - Alexander receives 170 acres of land from his father’s will.

1769 - Orange, NC - On 3 Jun. 1769 Alexander and wife Martha deed 170 ac to his father’s widow, Mary Montgomery.

1771 - Clinch River - Alexander and Martha move their family to the Clinch River area of Southwest Virginia. They live at the head of little Moccasin Creek where Alexander builds a log cabin.

Abt 1776 - VA - Alexander serves in Moore’s Fort on Clinch River (in Castlewood) during the Revolution. He was listed in the troops at Moore’s Fort on 30 June 1777.

1777 - Montgomery, VA - signs Oath of Allegiance as an inhabitant of Montgomery county along with other men from the Burks Garden area, near the headwaters of the Clinch River.

1778 - Washington, VA - Alexander, along with his brother-in-laws William and Andrew Cowan witness the will of their father-in-law, John Walker, on 25 Sep 1778. This will was proved in Washington County on 17 Dec 1778 by oaths of Alexander Montgomery and William Cowan, witnesses thereto.

1780 - Montgomery, VA - Alexander is on a Road Order Petition from the Burks Garden area.

1782 - VA - Alexander receives a land claim for 150 acres on Big Moccasin Creek dated 3 Dec 1782.

POSSIBLE MATCH - 1790 - Russell, VA - One Alexander Montgomery served on a jury in Russell County, Virginia in Sep 1790 in the case of Champ Faris vs. Richard Davis. After this there was no record of an Alexander Montgomery in Russell County until the 1797 Tax List; it is thought this was Alexander III.

1791 - Jefferson, TN - Alexander Montgomery is granted 450 ac on Long Creek by land patent on 13 Feb 1791. [Register of Deeds, Vol. I (Feb. 1808-Aug. 1809), Land Deeds of Jefferson County, Tennessee. Page 30, item 152-96]

1794 - Jefferson, TN - Alexander Montgomery of Washington county, Virginia to Patrick McGuire. 17 October 1794, 24 August 1793 450 acres, 50 pounds on Long Creek and granted to Alexander Montgomery by patent dated 13 Feb. 1791. [Register of Deeds, Vol. I (Feb. 1808-Aug. 1809), Land Deeds of Jefferson County, Tennessee. Page 30, item 152-96]

1808 - Alexander Montgomery, Senior. Bill of sale to his son Michael Montgomery 18 May 1808, 12 Feb. 1795 ** Acres 20 pounds My plantation and all my moveable property, goods and chattels. Test: James Montgomery./s/ Alexander Montgomery January sessions 1808 Then was the within Bill of Sale proved in court by oath of James Montgomery a subscribing witness there to, recorded and ordered to be registered. /s/ J. Research notes

No record has been found of disposition of the Washington county, VA lands of Alexander Montgomery.

His son, John Montgomery stated in his application for Revolutionary pension that, after the war was over, he returned to his father’s home in Virginia, where he remained for some time. Therefore, we assume Alexander remained in Virginia for a few years after the Revolutionary War and perhaps he died there.

It is not known when or where Alexander Montgomery, and his wife, Martha (Walker) Montgomery died, but clues point to Jefferson county, Tennessee sometime after 18 May 1808 when he sells his plantation and goods to son Micheal.
