From "Lincoln County, Kentucky", by the Lincoln County Historical Society, pub. 2002, pg. 230:

Our family heritage has been traced back as far as Alexander Montgomery who died in North Carolina in 1768. Two of his sons, John and William, Sr. were among the first to claim land in the wilderness that later became Lincoln County. Each of these sons and their descendants played an important role in the initial settling and early development of the county....

Our family is descended from John Montgomery mentioned above. John died in Amherst County, VA in 1784 but prior to this death had claimed land within the present-day boundaries of Lincoln County. John's children included:
    1. Nathan,
    2. Alexander,
    3. Joseph,
    4. John,
    5. James,
    6. Anne,
    7. Mary "Polly" and
    8. William.
