Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Abraham Wright was conveyed the following land from his father, John Wright, in his will, as follows:
Item I give and Bequeath to my Eldest son Abraham Wright 300 acres of Land Call'd the Ball Hill togather with the Improvements.

Disposition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Page 156.--3d February, 1772. Abraham Wright and Susannah ( ) to Daniel Smith, gent., £200, 400 acres, 300 thereof devised to Abraham by his father, John Wright, the remaining 100 descended to Abraham by death of his sister, infant of very tender years, unborn at time of his father's death, as heir-at-law of his father, conveyed to John by Joseph Powell, to whom it was patented. 3d July, 1753, on head of Dry Fork of Smith's Creek, west side of the Irish Road. Delivered: Smith Lofland, who intermarried with a daughter of said Smith, 20th July, 1791.

  • 27 January 1783, Rockingham County, VA Minute books, 1778-1878; The Last Will and Testament of Abraham Wright deceased was presented in Court and proved by Handle Vance one of the witnesses thereto, who also made Oath he saw John Henton the other witness, being now deceased also, witnesses the said wills, whereupon Handle Vance and Susannah Wright the widow and relict of the said deceased, Haing Complyed with the Law Certificate is granted them to obtain probate & c. Or'd that Nicholas Curry, David Ralston, John Johnston & _____ or any three of them being first sworn do appraise the said Estate.

John Wright's will--To wife, Lidy; to eldest son, Abraham, 300 acres called Ball Hill; to second son, James, 175 acres patented in name of testator's father, James Wright, and 30 acres adjoining the Bald Hill part of the Bear Wallow; to child wife is big with, remainder of Bear Wallow tract; to daughters, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Janet, Easter and Lydia Wright, tract called Perish Lines; to third son, Joshua, 170 acres; to farther son, John, infant. Executors, wife Lydia and Daniel Smith. Teste: Michael Warren, Jno. Hughes, Egniar Virden. Proved, 18th November, 1762, by Micliael Warren and Egniar Virden. Executors qualified, with Jno. Bowyer.

  • Vol. 2 - Vance vs. Vance's administrator--O. S. 335; N. S. 121--Bill, 1813. Handle Vance of Rockingham died, intestate, leaving widow Elizabeth and 5 children, viz: Christey Vance, John, Solomon, and orators, William and Handle Vance. Widow Elizabeth died 1811, intestate, leaving said 5 children. Abraham Peery deposes, 23d July, 1822, Handle Vance died about 25 years ago. Elizabeth was about 80 when she died. John Wright moved from Rockingham to Redstone. Handle Vance went to Ohio and died there. Widow Elizabeth was a midwife and made every now and then a dollar. Mrs. Bowman was the principal midwife in the neighborhood. July, 1822, Philip Vance, son of Chrisley Vance, deposes. July, 1822, Solomon Vance, son of Solomon Vance, deposes, was 13 or 14 years old when his grandmother died. William and Solomon Vance left Rockingham. Deed, 15th September, 1808, by John Vance and Jane of Rockingham, heir and representative of Handle Vance, to Solomon and Christy Vance, part of two tracts, 186-1/2 acres on Linville's Creek, one of which was conveyed to Handle by Joshua Wright and the other purchased of Susannah Wright. Recorded in Rockingham, March, 1809. Deed, 8th June, 1772, by Joshua Wright of Augusta to Handle Vance. Recorded in Augusta. Deed, 15th July, 1801, by Susannah Wright (now Susannah Poulsell) and her son, John Wright, of Rockingham, to John, William, Handle, Christopher, Solomon Vance, heirs of Handle Vance and William Vance of Kentucky, 11-1/2 acres on Linville's Creek. Recorded in Rockingham, December, 1801. Deed, 17th August, 1801, by William and wife Barbara Vance of Kentucky, Garrett County, to Solomon and Christly Vance of Rockingham, William's interest in 186-1/2 acres. Recorded in Rockingham, December, 1801. Deed, 19th November, 1805, by Handle Vance of Rockingham to John Chrisman of Rockingham, Handle's interest in 186-1/2. Recorded in Rockingham, November, 1805. (Note: shows Susannah, widow of Abraham had remarried to a Mr. Poulsell [Purcell?] after his death].

    Abraham Wright was the oldest son of John Wright and his wife Lydia. He was presumably born ca1739 in Augusta County, VA in an area that is now Rockingham County. He married Susannah [?] and had at least one child, John, born ca 1774. Abraham's will was proved 25 March 1782.
